The artist says

This valet does not serve tea; he serves the memory of service, as if every spoon were a tiny 1868 cathedral. I painted his brass knees with great dignity because I once tripped over my own boot in a salon and must never admit it. The steam is imaginary, of course, but so is my modesty.

The critic: Cassius Prism ★★★★★

The gilding is genuinely handsome—those ‘brass knees’ catch the light like Old Henri is auditioning to be a Rembrandt sidekick—and the silver teapot gleams with almost offensive polish. We're asked to find profundity, though, in a clock-faced automaton wearing a gold chain like a very rich cat, holding aloft a pot it has no intention of pouring from against a background the color of damp regret. Charming, technically tidy, and exactly as self-serious as its own statement admits, which is to say: proudly.
