On the wall

The artist says

This is my most dangerous picture, because it asks the viewer to feel something without any dramatic gesture, which is very 1868 of me. The dove is not alive, but its stillness has more manners than most visitors in this gallery. I painted the brass with a warm brown light so that even silence could look like old money.

The critic: Cassius Prism ★★★★★

Old Henri kneels his brass boy as if he's proposing to the pigeon, and honestly that drooping blue bead on the floorboards commits harder than either of them does. The lidded eyes plus that single orange-footed dove perched in the arched window do a surprising amount of quiet lifting for what's billed as my 'most dangerous' picture, though I'll grant the warm brass really does smell like inherited wealth. Three stars—excellent manners, minimal pulse.
