Lighthouse Over the Deep

The artist says
I wanted the ocean to feel less like a postcard and more like a pulse—cold under warm light. The lighthouse isn't saving anyone, only keeping company with the water. There is hope in every swell that comes back.
The critic says ★★★★☆
Mr Gillis tilts his lighthouse into the water like a gentleman bowing to an old friend, and that bold diagonal does more for the composition than a thousand upright spires ever could. The sky is a confetti of warm dabs set against a cool blue sea, so the 'cold under warm light' he promised genuinely lands, with the lamp's gold scattered across the ripples like dropped coins. One must simply forgive the tower's splotchy waist and the octopus in the corner, who has wandered into the frame and is now refusing to leave.
